Maasai expedition in Ngorongoro
Join our ethnographic adventure to discover the Maasai culture in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area which is a protected area and a World Heritage Site and is the largest intact volcanic caldera in the world. On this expedition, we'll stay in a Maasai village inside Ngorongoro and observe and participate in their life and traditions in this fantastic place. We'll also visit Maasai warriors bush camp and sleep in tents in savanna with the warriors. The expeditions includes bush walks with Maasai warriors and game drives in Ngorongoro Crater and Manyara National parks with the Maasai guides who are the best to tell about the wildlife and nature.
About the expedition
This trip is escorted by Anniina Sandberg, who is the founder of the Visit Natives. Anniina speaks fluent Swahili and Maa languages as she has conducted anthropological fieldwork among the Maasai. On this trip, we are hosted by the local Masai from Ngorongoro who will take us to the places that are very excluded and far away from touristic routes.
Day 1. Arrival. We'll pick you up from the airport, and we transfer with our private vehicle to Mto Wa Mbu village where we sleep in a lodge. Dinner together.
Day 2. After breakfast, we drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. We spend the day in our Maasai village. Welcoming ceremonies and dinner is served under the African stars in the most beautiful savanna.
Day 3. Full day game drive in Ngorongoro Crater with our Maasai guides. Lunch picnic in the Crater. We drive back to the savanna where we go to the Maasai warriors bush camp. Dinner and sleeping in the savanna.
Day 4. Full day exploring, observing and participating in the life of the Maasai warriors in Ngorongoro. Maasai barbeque in the bush.
Day 5. After breakfast, we drive to the Manyara national park where we spend all day on safari drives. In the evening we stay in a Maasai village.
Day 6. Staying with the Maasai full day exploring culture and doing bush walks with the Maasai warriors.
Day 7. Returning back to Arusha where we arrive
late afternoon.
Departures
Location
The expedition starts from and ends to Arusha, Tanzania. The nearest airport is Kilimanjaro Airport. We'll pick you up from the Kilimanjaro airport or from your hotel in Arusha.
Accommodation
Accommodation is in tents which are set up inside the Maasai boma or in the savanna. All tents have mosquito nets. A toilet is very basic and outdoors. There is no shower, but you will have a bucket of hot water every day to take a bath in trekking style. The first night is in a lodge in Mto Wa Mbu.
Food
To avoid any stomach problems, we have a Maasai chef who will prepare all the food for the guests. The tasty food is made on traditional and local ingredients. All the food is cooked well, and we use only boiled water to wash the dishes. You will be served bottled water, tea, and coffee.

The price includes private transportation (four-wheel jeep), accommodation in tents (including mattresses and sleeping bags), one night in a lodge, food, and drinks (breakfast, lunch, dinner), Maasai staff (chef, guide and driver). An African researcher guides the tour.
We donate part of the payment to the Maasai women's community project which is food security. We buy goats for the women's project. With one stay of 2 people, we can buy 6 goats for the Maasai women.
